Bombardier's new ALP45DP on display in Berlin

I received these pictures from several sources via email but thanks to Joe Roborecky I have the source of the photos below.

A couple of comments based on the pictures below: I assume this paint scheme is for display only and is not the final Transit colors. The coupler is covered so I am assuming it is a European designed coupler and not the one that will be in place for American and Canadian service. Nice landscaping.

The horns are exposed to the weather in this picture which will lend themselves to freezing in cold weather especially in Canadian service. Bombardier maintained the walkway on the front of the locomotive to "ensure" that the locomotives will always leave the yard with clean windshields. The large collision posts, while theoretically protecting the engineer during head-on collisions, will continue to make spotting trains at platforms difficult at best.

Notice, in the picture below, that there are vertical handrails to aid the mechanical department's safe access to the front of the locomotive yet in the picture, further below, of the rear of the locomotive, there are no vertical handrails to aid crew member's safe access to the rear of the locomotive from the train and visa versa. I hope this oversight is corrected before the locomotive gets to the states otherwise we will probably be subjected to another edict prohibiting crew members from using this exit except "in the case of emergency".

The engine room seems to be well lit but that will require proper maintenance to keep it that way. I see a change in floor elevation below the doorway between the engine room and what is probably the air room at the back of the locomotive. The Ergonomics committee protested any changes in floor elevation as potential tripping hazards but it was made clear that there would be some as a matter of design necessity. Walkers beware!

The cab design should be familiar to all who have run the ALP-46 locomotives. The ADU has been changed to a new design. We requested a new seat with more robust adjustment controls as the ones we are presently using are too fragile and the control knobs are to hard with sharp edges that tend to come loose and fail. This is particularly true with the seat pan adjustments. Bombardier was supposed to get together with USSC and work out a fix but I personally have not heard what the results, if any, of that meeting were. Softer knobs were supposed to be retrofitted on all the USSC seats in the ALP-46 and PL42AC locomotives but evidence of that is nonexistent.
