Rule 558 - Cab Signal Flips

When a cab signal aspect "flips", monetarily changing aspect and then returning to the original aspect, the Engineer must notify the Dispatcher or Operator as soon as possible without delaying the train. The Engineer must give the following information:

"Cab signal flipped from (signal name) to (signal name) on No. (track number) at (signal bridge or MP number) or between (designated points if multiple occurrence)."

When the "flip" holds for a duration which requires the cab signal to be acknowledged, the Engineer must so state when reporting the occurrence.

EXPLANATION:

Cab Signal flips can be caused by poor sending sending current or by signal bonds that are not properly attached. Signal flips must be reported so that the sending system can be checked out and repairs made as needed. The locations of the flips should be reported as accurately as possible so signal department personnel may locate a problem quickly.

Example: The cab signal flipped from Clear to Restricting on No. 1 track from two catenary poles east of milepost 4 to one catenary post west of milepost 4. The cab signal has to be acknowledged."

As shown in the example above, if the cab signal flip requires that the engineer acknowledge, that action must also be stated when reporting the flip.
